Russia labels Ukraine’s F-16 jets nuclear threat, warns against French involvement

Tensions escalate as French President Emmanuel Macron hints at the possibility of sending troops to Ukraine should Russia breach the front lines. Macron warns of the potential for further aggression in Europe if Russia prevails. In response, Russia asserts that any French military deployment would be seen as fair game.

Amidst these heightened tensions, Russia reiterates its warning regarding Ukraine's recently acquired F-16 fighter jets, labeling them a "nuclear-capable" threat. The Russian Foreign Ministry denounces the F-16 deployment as a deliberate provocation orchestrated by the U.S. and NATO, cautioning against any aggression towards Crimea with the threat of severe retaliation.

The F-16 jets, supplied by Western allies to modernize Ukraine's aging Soviet-era fleet, aim to bolster Ukraine's military capabilities with enhanced range and maneuverability. These jets will be compatible with existing U.S. weaponry, including the AIM-9M Sidewinder missile and the AGM-88 High-Speed Anti-Radiation Missile, designed to target enemy radar systems.

Ukraine's military, undergoing training with the F-16s since November of last year, plans imminent deployment. Despite the F-16's adaptability for nuclear armament, Ukraine lacks a nuclear arsenal, with no indication that nuclear powers intend to provide such weaponry.

Nevertheless, former U.S. military pilots express skepticism about the F-16's efficacy in the conflict, citing Russia's deployment of advanced air-defense systems like the S-400, posing formidable challenges beyond those encountered in previous conflicts. According to the open-source intelligence site Oryx, which verifies losses through visual evidence, Ukraine has already lost at least 85 combat aircraft since the invasion commenced.
