Russia will continue extensive missile assaults until Ukraine receives all scheduled military aid from the US, aiming not only for the seizure but the utter destruction of Ukraine's energy infrastructure, according to a report from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
The report highlights that the recent shelling on the night of May 8 marked the fifth significant attack by Russian missiles and drones on Ukraine's energy infrastructure since March 22, 2024. Russian military strategy appears focused on exploiting vulnerabilities in Ukrainian air defense to dismantle the energy system and cripple the nation's defense and industrial capabilities.
ISW forecasts ongoing massive strikes from Russia to inflict enduring harm on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, anticipating that Ukraine's air defense systems will remain compromised until the arrival of American interceptor systems and other defensive assets.
Moreover, the report underscores increased Russian assaults on Ukraine's transportation infrastructure in recent weeks, aimed at disrupting land communication lines and impeding the flow of American security assistance to the frontlines.
"Russia's strategy involves targeted, yet sizable missile and drone strikes aimed at disrupting rather than completely disabling Ukraine's energy infrastructure. The recommendation is for Russia to escalate its missile usage to overcome air defense systems near energy facilities, causing significant damage," states the ISW report.
Concurrently, the Russian Ministry of Defense has stated that strikes on energy facilities and defense industries are intended to diminish Ukraine's capacity for military equipment production and hinder the transfer of Western equipment to the frontlines.
As previously reported by Ukrainian News Agency, the Russian army launched a coordinated strike with various types of missiles and attack drones overnight into Wednesday, May 8, with a total of 76 air attack assets deployed - 55 missiles and 21 attack drones.Russia will continue extensive missile assaults until Ukraine receives all scheduled military aid from the US, aiming not only for the seizure but the utter destruction of Ukraine's energy infrastructure, according to a report from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
